City to consider today staff report to halt tunnel project

Richmond City Council will vote today on a
staff report to suspend the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project.
The report recommends the premier be urged to
stop all current work associated with the project, including the relocation of
the BC Hydro transmission lines, pending a comprehensive review and analysis of
alternative options.
In addition, it proposes two alternate
options for twinning the existing tunnel for addressing current traffic
congestion at the South Fraser crossing.
The report will be considered at a special
meeting of council’s general purposes committee at 4 p.m. at Richmond City
Hall.
Subject to committee support, the report
would then go to the regular council meeting for ratification tonight at 7 p.m.
